BIG HORN COUNTY EQIP PROGRAM

How EQIP is being implemented in the county:

The Big Horn County Local Work Group has identified the following natural resource concerns as the top priority:

1. Ground and Surface water quality affected by animal waste

This local priority supports the national priority to reduce non-point source pollution in impaired water bodies. Waste management systems, feedlot relocation, and nutrient management will be targeted in an effort to help producers avoid regulation, and improve water quality.

 2. Irrigation Water Management

This local priority supports the national priority of conservation of ground and surface water. Another priority is to reduce soil erosion and sedimentation from cropland. Improved irrigation efficiencies are crucial in dealing with critical water shortages.

3. Grazingland Health

This local priority supports the national priority to reduce soil erosion and sedimentation from agricultural lands and promote at risk species habitat.  A properly planned and applied grazing system is the most effective strategy to prepare for drought, adapt management during drought, and help recover from drought. This priority is acceptable on irrigated pasture as well as rangeland.

4. Wildlife

The local work group will also accept applications that address wildlife habitat and windbreaks.

Big Horn County local work group distributes allocation dollars to the various priorities in the following manner:

  • Ground and Surface water quality affected by animal waste – 100% funded through state allocation.  Local work group will determine formula if requests exceed state allocation.

  • Irrigation Water Management – high efficiency irrigation systems (sprinkler and drip) – 40% of county allocation.
  • Irrigation Water Management – lower efficiency irrigation systems (non sprinkler and non drip)– 30% of county allocation.
  • Grazingland Health – 30% of county allocation.

  • Wildlife – 100% funded through state allocation.  Local work group will determine formula if requests exceed state allocation.
