Lower Wind Watershed |
October 2005
The total estimated area in the
watershed is 1,092,791 acres. The majority of the watershed is in Fremont
County, Wyoming and includes part of the Wind River Indian Reservation. The watershed also extends into small portions of
Hot Springs and Natrona counties in Wyoming.
The land uses in this watershed consist of rangeland and irrigated cropland,
pasture, and hayland. The watershed includes the northern intermountain desert
basin and central Rocky Mountains east of the continental divide.
There are approximately 176 farms and ranches in the watershed according to the
2000 census. There are actually over 400 operations. Primary crops include
small grains, corn, beans, beets, and alfalfa hay. Rangeland covers
997,390 acres of the watershed. Ranches are
mostly cow/calf and some yearling operations. There are also several
Tribal operations in the watershed.

Applicants must address water quality and soil quality concerns as program eligibility criteria and enrollment will be targeted to those demonstrating the highest levels of stewardship. CPS payment limitations will be based on three "tiers" that represent increasing levels of resource treatment. Payments rise with increased levels of treatment.
CSP contract payments include two or more of the following four components:
1. An annual component for the existing base level of conservation
treatment. (All contracts will have stewardship payments.)
2. An annual payment for maintaining existing
conservation practices. It will be calculated to equal 25% of the
contract's annual Stewardship Payment. (All contracts will have an
existing practice component.)
3. A one-time cost share component for implementing additional needed
practices. (Not all contracts will have a new practice component.)
4. An enhancement component for exceptional conservation effort and
additional activities that provide increased resource benefits beyond the
prescribed level. (Most contracts will have an enhancement component.)
